SAVIOR [CHRISTmas]

SAVIOR [WP]

With this design I wanted to create an illustration that really emcompassed the true meaning of Christmas, and the importance of Christ. I went through the scriptures looking for a definitive verse(s) to base the art upon. In reading Luke 2: 11 – 12, two things really stood out to me. One, is a description of the Christ as the Savior and Lord. I used this literary reference to the mission and destiny of Jesus; to die for the sins of mankind, as a visual cue, by placing the crown of thorns upon the baby Jesus.

Secondly, verse eleven specifically points out, that the sign by which the shepherds would recognize Him, was that the baby would be wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger. The appearance of angels are mentioned throughout the story of the birth of Christ; and the ‘strips of cloth’ created the ideal shapes and space to integrate ‘angelic forms’ into the design.

Originally, I planned on drafting a crown of gold and precious stones; above the crown of thorns; referring to the King/Lordship of Jesus. This didn’t suit the organic nature of the overall composition. The words of Jesus came back to me from Matthew Chapter 6: 28-29, where He mentioned the flowers of the fields, and that even King Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as one of them. This gave me the idea to use the form of a flower as a crown above the the head of Jesus – which flowed perfectly with the other design elements of the piece. I also added a dripping form from the crest of that ‘Flower-Crown’ onto the head of Jesus, to symbolically portray that He is the ‘Anointed One’.
